Phil Donahue’s family has revealed that he passed away after a long illness. While further details are not yet available, it is known that he was surrounded by his loved ones and his beloved golden retriever during his final moments.
During a segment on Monday, August 19, “Today’s” Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones shared the tragic news with their audience. In addition to his family, Phil leaves behind an incredible legacy that began when he started his career in 1959, initially in radio before moving to television.
Phil Donahue was a true pioneer of the modern format of issue-based daytime talk shows. He was one of the first to include audience participation, and his show, “The Phil Donahue Show,” achieved unprecedented success, becoming one of the most influential TV programs of its era.
In 2002, Phil made a comeback to television with his MSNBC show called “Donahue.” Sadly, the program was canceled a few months after it premiered. Apart from his achievements on TV, Phil Donahue received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in May 2024, awarded by President Joe Biden.
This esteemed award is the highest civilian honor in the United States and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society, world peace, and the prosperity and values of the country.
To honor Phil Donahue’s everlasting impact and commemorate his legacy, his family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
