‘This Old House’ Star Passed Away At 70

Roger Cook is a familiar name to fans of home improvement television, particularly due to his many years on TV show “This Old House.” The expert landscaper passed away on August 21. He was 70 years old and died after a long battle with illness.

This Old House executive producer Chris Wolfe spoke to PEOPLE about Cook’s death. “I remember every lesson from Roger,” Wolfe said of Cook, whose advice helped him with his own garden. “More importantly, there are millions of people whose lives have been enriched by everything Roger taught them.”

Roger Cook was born in 1955, Cook became a favorite personality in the home renovation community. He was well known for his down-to-earth personality and extensive knowledge of landscaping and gardening.

Roger graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management and Conservation Law. After college, he co-founded the landscaping company K & R Tree and Landscape Co.

Cook first appeared on “This Old House” in 1988, joining as the landscape contractor. His role quickly expanded as he became a regular presence on the show. Roger’s approach was always practical and accessible. This made him popular with viewers who appreciated his ability to explain complex tasks in simple, understandable terms.

On “This Old House,” Roger Cook was a teacher. He had a unique ability to make even the most challenging projects seem within reach. Whether he was building a stone wall, installing a new lawn, or creating a backyard oasis, Roger’s calm presence and step-by-step guidance made viewers feel like they could complete similar projects in their own homes.

His work not only enhanced the homes but also promoted sustainable landscaping practices.

In 2020, Roger Cook announced his retirement from “This Old House” due to health issues. His departure marked the end of an era for the show, as he had been the show’s star for over three decades.

Cook leaves behind his son Roger, daughter Molly and his three grandchildren. His wife Kathy passed away in 2010.
