Peter Marshall, best known as a game show host on “The Hollywood Squares” passed away. He was 98.

The game show host died of kidney failure on August 14 at his Los Angeles home according to his publicist Harlan Boll.

Born as Ralph Pierre LaCock on March 30, 1926, in Huntington, West Virginia before he became known as Peter Marshall. Marshall’s early life was marked by personal tragedy when his father, a pharmacist, died when he was just 10 years old. This led his family to move to New York City, where he developed an interest in the entertainment industry. He adopted the stage name Peter Marshall, partially to avoid any naughty associations with his birth name. Also, as a tribute to his sister, who was a popular singer known as Joanne Dru.

Before his game show fame, Marshall enjoyed success in radio and as a stage performer. He appeared in several Broadway productions, including the musical “Skyscraper” and”Bye Bye Birdie.”

It was his role as the host of “Hollywood Squares” from 1966 to 1981 that boosted him to national fame. The show, which featured a tic-tac-toe board of entertainers answering questions, became a phenomenon. Marshall’s wit, charm, and smooth hosting style made him a beloved television personality.

Beyond “Hollywood Squares,” Marshall’s career includes a variety of roles in television, film, and theater. He made guest appearances on numerous TV shows, including “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island,” and even had a recurring role on “The Big Valley.” He received several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host.

He is survived by his wife Laurie and their three children.
