Ballerina Michaela DePrince passed away unexpectedly according to her spokesman per The Daily Mail. She was 29.
DePrince spent her early years as an orphan in Sierra Leone before an American family adopted her, and brought her to The United States. Her family has not shared details about her death.
She was a world-renowned ballerina who captured the hearts of many. Born Mabinty Mangura in Sierra Leone, she endured a difficult childhood, suffering from malnutrition and mistreatment in an orphanage before being adopted by a New Jersey couple at the age of four.
Her rise to fame began at 17 when she appeared on Dancing with the Stars, and she gained further recognition for her standout performance in Beyoncé’s Lemonade music video. DePrince also starred in the acclaimed 2011 documentary First Position. The ballet community is mourning her loss, as her remarkable journey from an orphaned child to a star ballerina inspired many.
Driven by a passion for dance from an early age, Michaela DePrince trained at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. In 2012, she joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem, later performing with the Dutch National Ballet. In 2021, she became the main soloist with the Boston Ballet, continuing to shine in the world of professional dance.
On September 13, DePrince’s death was confirmed with a statement on her official Instagram account.
