Remembering Barry Newman

The beloved actor Barry Newman, who left a memorable mark on Hollywood, passed away at the age of 92. It’s reported that his final moments were spent in a hospital in New York City on May 11.

For many, Newman was best known for his gripping performance in the acclaimed action movie, Vanishing Point. News of his passing was confirmed by his wife, Angela, and also shared by close friends through various social media platforms.

Angela fondly remembered him as “a rock for so many people, someone who uplifted spirits and brought joy wherever he went.” In a tribute, she highlighted his sense of humor, describing him as “a beacon of light” to countless individuals.

Born and bred in Boston, Newman’s career spanned across stage, film, and television. He rose to fame with the 1974 courtroom drama, Petrocelli. His journey into acting began after he met the legendary Lee Strasberg while attending Brandeis University in Massachusetts. This encounter inspired him to take acting classes in New York City post-graduation.

Throughout his career, he showcased his talent alongside Hollywood greats. Notably, he appeared in Daylight with Sylvester Stallone in 1996, Bowfinger with Steve Martin in 1999, and shared the screen with the late Peter Fonda in The Limey that same year.

Facing Health Challenges

Newman’s career faced a challenge when he was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in 2009, which affected his acting opportunities.

One of his last known works was “Finding Hannah,” filmed in 2019 but released in 2022.

The 1971 film Vanishing Point, although not an immediate hit in the U.S., helped Newman earn significant recognition. In particular, it found huge success in London, capturing the imagination of audiences. As Newman once humorously remarked, “In America, I was just a guy picking up his bags at the airport, whereas, in England, I was a hero!” His legacy is immortalized by the enduring impact of his films and his vibrant personality.
