In the 1990s, she gained prominence for her role as the good-natured and no-nonsense dispatcher, Sergeant Barbara Semanski, on the hit series Northern Exposure. Her portrayal of Semanski, a character who balanced strength with warmth, became a highlight of the series and won her lasting recognition.She appeared in 12 episodes of the series, making an appearance in every season following her debut in Season 2.
In 1999, Delano further secured her place in pop culture with her role as the quirky and assertive gym teacher, Coach Sue Sylvester, on the cult favorite Popular, created by Ryan Murphy. Her portrayal was praised for its comedic timing and depth, and she quickly became a fan-favorite character.
