Doug Kiker, an Alabama native affectionately known as “The Singing Garbage Man,” gained national recognition during Season 18 of American Idol. His heartfelt performance of Rascal Flatts’ Bless the Broken Road deeply moved judge Katy Perry, even bringing her to tears.
Although he was eliminated from the competition, Kiker returned for the season finale, delivering a virtual performance of his audition song. However, in the months following his time on the show, Kiker made headlines again after being arrested and charged in connection with a domestic violence incident.
His family set up a GoFundMe to cover the costs of bringing him home and for funeral expenses. “We are reaching out for help to honor Douglas’s memory and give him a proper farewell. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will go directly to the funeral costs and allow us to navigate this difficult time without the added financial burden. Thank you for your love, support, and generosity during this incredibly difficult time. We greatly appreciate each and everyone of yall.”
According to TMZ, Doug is survived by his two children, whom he shared with his ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook.
