Donald Trump’s Sobriety Story: A Personal Choice

Donald Trump has never been one to follow the crowd when it comes to lifestyle choices. Despite some politically charged times and serving as a two-term president, Trump remains adamant about his choice to steer clear of alcohol. This decision, unlike many of his political counterparts, has a deeply personal reason behind it.
In a candid conversation on Theo Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend, Trump shared the heartfelt story of why he decided early on to lead a sober life. At 79, as Trump continues to leave his mark on history, this behind-the-scenes look into his life captured attention.
Von asked, “I noticed at the events you donโt drink or smoke, right? You never have?”
The president recounted the influence his family had, especially his older brother, Frederick Trump Jr. Trump revealed that his brother’s life served as a profound lesson on the impact of alcohol and smoking.

“No, I never have,” Trump responded. “I had a great brother who taught me a lesson.”
His brother Fred, who passed away from a heart attack at 42 in 1981, was a significant influence in his life. Trump paints a vivid picture of Fred, describing him as a “great guy” and “very handsome.” Yet, Fred struggled with alcohol addiction, alongside heavy smoking.
Trump emphasized the advice he often shares with young people and his own children: “No drugs, no drinking, no cigarettes.” Fred was someone who Trump looked up to, not just for his charm and stunning personality but also as a warning of the perils that come with alcoholism.

Fred’s enduring battle with alcohol addiction deeply affected young Donald. He couldn’t help but be amazed at Fred’s physical resilience, despite the toll alcohol took on him. “He lived for so long in bad conditions. I was amazed his body could hold out… it had bad moments, but his body was unbelievably strong that it could withstand this,” Trump shared.
What stands out most from Trump’s reflection is his foresight. He realized early on that if he ever attempted alcohol, he might very well succumb to its addictive grasp like his brother.
Trumpโs brotherโs decline left a lasting impression on him, one that he’s openly discussed throughout his life. In 2018, speaking to Fox News, Trump reiterated the strong personality and unfortunate struggles Fred faced due to alcohol. “I had a brother, Fred โ great guy, best-looking guy, best personality, much better than mine. But he had a problem, he had a problem with alcohol and he would tell me โdonโt drink, donโt drink.โ”
Trump acknowledged how tough Fred’s journey was and how it served as a formative lesson, one that has influenced his own life choices. “He had a very, very tough life because of alcohol. He was a strong guy, but it was a tough, tough thing that he was going through. I learned because of Fred.”
In a world where social pressures often dictate behavior, Trump’s choice to abstain from alcohol illustrates the profound impact personal experiences can have. His brother’s life and advice provided him with a moral compass, guiding him away from potential pitfalls and towards a path of sobriety.
This glimpse into Donald Trump’s personal life offers a new perspective on the man often seen through a political lens. His story resonates on a deeply human level, highlighting the importance of family influence and the power of personal decisions.
