In a historic moment for New York City, the mayoral race concluded with 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani emerging victorious, defeating both former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. This remarkable win makes Mamdani the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first of South Asian descent.

Before the election, the atmosphere was charged. Left-leaning Zohran Mamdani faced opposition from President Trump, who holds strong personal and historical connections to New York City.

Back in June, during an interview with Fox News, Trump expressed disbelief at the possibility of Mamdani winning, labeling him as “a pure communist.” Prior to the election, Trump used Truth Social to issue a dire warning, hinting at potential federal funding cuts to New York if Mamdani succeeded. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, but Mamdani is not!” Trump stated. He further cautioned, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” adding to the tension.
Now that the election is over, the city witnessed the highest voter turnout in over half a century, with over two million New Yorkers casting their ballots.
In his victory address on November 4, Mamdani fearlessly challenged Trump. He proclaimed, “New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant. If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”

Mamdani didn’t hold back. Amidst an enthusiastic crowd, he addressed Trump with a sharp message, “Donald Trump, since I know youโre watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
Following the election results and Mamdaniโs direct words, Trump resorted to Truth Social, posting a cryptic and foreboding statement, “…AND SO IT BEGINS!” This enigmatic message has spurred extensive speculation. Previously, Trump had accused Mamdani of being a “communist” and threatened to reduce federal support for the city, leading many to believe financial constraints might be his initial response.
Rumors have been swirling of potential radical actions, including arrest or deportation threats if Mamdani assumed office, leaving some to speculate that Trumpโs cryptic post might foreshadow such measures.
The uncertainty of Trump’s intentionsโwhether theyโre mere threats or hints of an impending political clashโframes Mamdaniโs historic win as not only a victory but the beginning of an intriguing episode in the city’s political landscape.
How will this battle unfold between Mamdani and Trump? Only time will tell as New York City embarks on this new chapter.
