James Van Der Beek, beloved for his role in Dawson’s Creek, has emotionally updated fans on his challenging battle with cancer, bringing forth a wave of concern for him and his family.
Recognizing the Symptoms
In 2023, James was confronted with the daunting news of stage three colorectal cancer. Initially, he noticed some unusual changes in his bowel habits, which he thought might be due to his coffee consumption.
James explained, “Nothing was glaringly wrong at first. I assumed perhaps cutting out coffee or cream might solve it. Yet, when there was no improvement, I realized it needed more attention.”
As he underwent the necessary procedure, he felt an unexpected calmness. Recalling the moment he was told the difficult diagnosis, he mentioned, “The specialist informed me — with the best possible bedside manner — it was indeed cancer.”
The news profoundly affected James’s personal life. He has expressed how the illness interrupted his daily roles.
Sharing his feelings on Instagram, he told his followers, “Because of the treatment, I felt distant from my duties as a husband and father. It was hard not being able to work and provide.”
However, finding solace in work, James added, “Acting helps me forget about cancer between ‘action’ and ‘cut’. It’s a journey I’m on, likely a lifelong one.”
Recently, James shared how his children have become part of his caregiving team, a role reversal that touched many hearts.
He also voiced the sadness of missing a Dawson’s Creek reunion. “It’s heartbreaking not to be there, not to hug my dear friends. I wanted so much to thank everyone involved from the bottom of my heart.”
Expressing gratitude to the cast, crew, and fans, he noted, “The support from the entire crew and especially you, the wonderful fans, has been overwhelming.”

Recently, in efforts to offset medical expenses, James ventured into auctioning personal memorabilia.
With sincerity, he announced a special auction event to generate funds for his ongoing cancer treatments.
Slated for December 5–7, 2025, the auction, in partnership with Propstore, will give fans a chance to own pieces from James’s career.
Iconic items up for bid include Dawson’s prom necklace, a sentimental token worth between $26,400 and $52,800, and his flannel shirt from the series’ pilot, starting at around $4,000.
Acknowledging the mixed emotions parting with these pieces, he said, “While nostalgic, it’s fulfilling to share these treasures with fans who’ve supported me all these years.”
This isn’t the first time he’s liquidated keepsakes to help his family face the financial strains during his cancer journey.
