‘Little House On The Prairie’ Star Heard Husband Timothy Busfield’s Police Interview On Speakerphone

Melissa Gilbert was present during a phone interview her husband, Timothy Busfield, had with police amid an investigation into his alleged sex crimes, according to an arrest warrant.

The Albuquerque Police Department issued the warrant on Friday, Jan. 9, alleging that Busfield, 68, engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with two child actors — 11-year-old twin boys. One of the boys alleged the incidents began when he was 7.

According to the warrant obtained by PEOPLE, Officer Marvin Brown contacted Busfield for a phone interview on Nov. 3, 2025. Busfield told the officer he was in New York at the time and that his wife, Melissa Gilbert, was listening to the call on speakerphone.

During the interview, Busfield allegedly told police that the boys’ parents were upset after their children were replaced with a younger actor. He also claimed that shortly afterward, Warner Bros. contacted him to say the studio was investigating a complaint.

Gilbert, 61, is best known for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1983. She began acting as a child and later appeared in numerous TV movies, series, and stage productions, including Dancing with the Stars. From 2001 to 2005, she served as president of the Screen Actors Guild and has also written bestselling memoirs about her life and career.

The police investigation into allegations against Timothy Busfield began on Nov. 1, 2024, after a doctor at University of New Mexico Hospital alerted authorities to a possible case of sexual abuse.

According to the arrest warrant, the victims’ parents told police their twin sons were child actors who met Busfield while working on the FOX series The Cleaning Lady, where Busfield served as a director. The parents said professionals later suggested the boys may have been “groomed.”

At the time, investigators determined the case did not meet acceptance criteria. In October 2025, however, the boys’ mother filed a police report and contacted Child Protective Services, stating that both children disclosed sexual abuse by Busfield that allegedly occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024. According to the warrant per PEOPLE, she was initially told that because there was no physical abuse, no action could be taken.

During a later phone interview with police, investigators concluded that Busfield and his wife, Melissa Gilbert, did have a relationship with the two boys and their family outside of work.

According to the arrest warrant, Officer Marvin Brown stated that Timothy Busfield and his wife, Melissa Gilbert, told investigators they had purchased Christmas gifts for the two boys and spent time with them at several social gatherings during the period under investigation.

In summarizing his findings, Brown again referenced the gift-giving, writing that Busfield invited the family to off-set gatherings and that Gilbert bought Christmas gifts as a way to build closeness with the children and their family.

The warrant also notes that Busfield previously faced sexual assault allegations dating back to 1994, though those earlier claims did not result in charges.

Gilbert and Busfield, who is known for his roles on Thirtysomething and The West Wing, were married in 2013.

As of now, representatives for both Gilbert and Busfield have not responded to PEOPLE’s repeated requests for comment.
