In recent happenings, President Donald Trump established a new initiative he called the โBoard of Peace.โ The idea behind this venture was to foster peace in areas troubled by conflict, such as the Gaza Strip. Part of the launch included an intriguing invitation to Pope Leo, although the Holy Father’s response was anything but anticipated.
The creation of the โBoard of Peaceโ by Trump was not met with widespread enthusiasm. Designed as a vehicle to contribute to peace, the Board required nations to pay a hefty fee of $1 billion for permanent participation. Despite this, several notable countries, including Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine, declined to join. Alternatively, countries such as Israel, Argentina, Russia, Hungary, and Saudi Arabia accepted the proposal.

Upon unveiling this initiative in January, Trump notably extended an invitation to Pope Leo, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, inviting him to join this effort for peace. However, after some time to deliberate, the Vatican issued a rather straightforward refusal.
Pope Leoโs Reply to the ‘Board of Peace’ Invitation
After the initial invitation was sent, the Vatican postponed its response to Trumpโs proposal, with officials stating that Pope Leo was considering the invitation carefully. However, in recent developments, the Vatican has decisively declined participation in the venture.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who serves as the Vatican’s chief diplomat, conveyed that Pope Leo trusts issues such as the Gaza conflict are best managed by the United Nations rather than by a peace board led by a single nation. A Vatican spokesperson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the Churchโs stance is rooted in focusing on humanity and upholding laws justly and humanely.
Although Pope Leo has not personally articulated the reasons behind the decision in public, the verdict is consistent with his other public statements concerning global challenges. He has consistently spoken out about peace, human rights, and the treatment of refugees and migrants by world leaders, underscoring that neglecting freedom and human dignity threatens human rights.
These recent matters have stirred quite the conversation globally. What are your thoughts about the Vaticanโs standpoint and its implications? Feel free to share your reflections.
