The police in Arizona might be easing off their official search for the missing elderly woman, Nancy Guthrie, but her supportive neighbors are as dedicated as ever.
Driven by a sense of urgency and the desire for answers, these local heroes have taken it upon themselves to scour the surrounding desert areas and look through nearby homeless encampments around Tucson, hoping to stumble upon any fresh insights.
An Encouraging Discovery by Volunteers
Their dogged determination bore fruit on Sunday morning. Just two short miles from Nancy Guthrie’s residence, a torn black backpack was unearthed, leading to swift action from law enforcement authorities, as reported by The New York Post.
This battered backpack was discovered inside a storm drain frequently used as a makeshift home by some individuals around 11 a.m.
The location, off West Orange Grove Road near State Route 77, lies a mere drive away from Nancy’s place in the Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson.

One of the dedicated volunteers, Catherine Lopez, glimpsed the backpack nestled inside the tunnel and wasted no time in alerting the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. Within 15 minutes, a deputy was at the scene. Photos taken right there showed Lopez gently probing the backpack with a stick while conversing with law enforcement on the phone.
Another photo captured a deputy, now wearing gloves, collecting the disheveled bag carefully near a patrol car. There were two homeless folks nearby at the time, but they took off as soon as deputies arrived.
The diligent Nancy Guthrie volunteers, undeterred by setbacks, diligently pursue any leads as they handed over the backpack to the police for further examination.
Initially, detectives noted that the backpack had no resemblance to the one seen on Nancy’s home security footage. That original bag was mentioned to be a black Ozark Trail Hiker model that is exclusively available at Walmart.
As events unfolded, Kevin Adger, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department, shared with The Arizona Republic: “Volunteers discovered the backpack yesterday, and it was promptly retrieved by a deputy for scrutiny at a nearby substation. Upon examining the bag and its items, it appears unlikely to enhance this investigation as a credible lead. The backpack shows signs of exposure far exceeding three weeks, with ID documentation inside pertaining to a minor.”
Meanwhile, there was also a glove discovered nearby along North First Avenue, further expanding the growing compilation of objects that require investigation.
Possible Suspect Sightings
Beyond these recent developments, there are whispers of new information as a source from law enforcement mentioned to CBS News that the suspected individuals involved may have lurked around her entrance even prior to Nancy Guthrie’s fateful night of disappearance.
The FBI has made previously public a doorbell camera snapshot showing a masked individual toting a backpack, identifying them as the main suspect in the investigation.
The CBS source suggests that this same individual may have made appearances at Nancy’s property on different occasions preceding the vanish.
Yet, the local authorities have not officially verified if these supposed sightings might’ve happened on separate days. Visuals shown by CBS and attributed to the FBI offer glimpses of a concealed man, sans backpack, caught on Nancy’s doorbell camera prior to any alleged abduction — though when exactly these were taken is still a mystery. ABC News was first to shed light on these intricate developments.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department clarified that those images are devoid of any date or timestamp, cautioning that any assertions regarding their capture on distinct dates remain “purely speculative.” The department emphasized that this investigation is ongoing, wholly dependent on concrete, verifiable evidence.
Authorities suspect Nancy underwent a deliberate, premeditated kidnapping. Her distressed family continues to seek her safe return fervently, urging evidence of her well-being to surface. Sadly, the case only births more queries than conclusions.
