Trump quietly appoints Erika Kirk for new military position – there’s one issue

Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk, has been appointed to the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors.

Her appointment has drawn attention after it was announced yesterday (10 March) that U.S. President Donald Trump, 79, chose the 37-year-old to fill the position that had previously been held by her late husband, Charlie Kirk.

The mother of two became a widow in September when her husband, a well-known right-wing activist and commentator, was fatally shot while hosting a debate event at a university in Utah.

After Kirk’s death, Erika assumed the position of CEO at the nonprofit organization in late September and has since made appearances at several political events, including attending President Trump’s State of the Union address last month.

It has now been confirmed that she has been appointed to the influential board that oversees the U.S. Air Force Academy.

According to the board’s official website, its role is to review and evaluate matters related to the Academy, including morale, discipline, curriculum, teaching standards, facilities, financial management, academic practices, and other key institutional issues.

After completing its review, the board submits recommendations to the secretary of war and the president.

The panel consists of 16 members, six of whom are appointed directly by the president. The remaining members include a mix of Republican and Democratic lawmakers, along with retired Air Force Colonel Doug “Stoli” Nikolai, who served during the 2003 Iraq War.

There was no formal announcement from the academy regarding Erika’s appointment. The news first surfaced on Tuesday when it was reported by The Hill and several other political news outlets.

Olivia Wales, a spokesperson for the White House, described Erika as an “ideal” choice for the position.

In a statement, she said: “President Trump made the perfect choice in appointing Erika Kirk to the US Air Force Academy Board of Visitors. Charlie Kirk served proudly on the board, inspiring not only the next generation of servicemembers but also millions of people worldwide with his strong Christian faith, commitment to truth, and deep love for the country.

“Erika Kirk will carry forward that legacy and serve as a fearless advocate for the most elite airpower force in history, whose warriors keep our nation safe, strong, and free.”

However, the appointment has also raised questions and criticism. According to The Independent, Erika does not have formal military training or experience, and neither did her late husband.

Trump initially appointed Kirk to the board in March 2025, several months before his death in September of that year.

The decision to appoint Erika has sparked debate online, with some social media users questioning her qualifications.

One user on X wrote: “Reminder: her husband was a podcaster with no military service.”

Another commented: “And she has even less experience.”

A third added: “Wow. Did he ever consider appointing someone actually qualified for the position? Sad.”

Still confused, another user asked: “What exactly are her qualifications, honestly?”

A fifth critic remarked: “If Erika can secure a role like this without any educational or professional background in the field, then I guess qualifications are just a nice suggestion these days.

“Apparently merit has officially taken a back seat.”
