‘Mad Max’ Star Passed Away At 76

Swedish actor and Olympic-class weightlifter Kjell Nilsson, best known for his role as the terrifying gang leader Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, has died at the age of 76.

Nilsson’s family confirmed in a Facebook post that he “passed away peacefully in his sleep” at his home in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday following a four-and-a-half-year battle with kidney disease.

His family wrote, “GREETINGS FROM THE FAMILY OF HUMUNGUS, THE LORD HUMUNGUS”

As many of you know, Kjell had been battling end-stage kidney disease for the past four and a half years, receiving dialysis three days a week.

It was a long and painful journey, filled with countless battles to overcome, including the gradual loss of his bodily autonomy.

This past Sunday, after much consideration, Kjell made the decision to take back control over his pain and his body by stopping dialysis.

On Thursday, Torsdag (Thor’s Day), July 2, Kjell passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his sons.

The days leading up to his passing were filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance. He did it his way.

Back in 2022, many medical professionals told Kjell that he would never make it to his first Christmas after kidney failure. He proved them wrong. He celebrated four more Christmases, giving him four precious extra years with the people he loved most.

Unfortunately, a kidney transplant was never an option. Forty years ago, severe blood clotting in his legs left him without the major arteries needed for adequate blood flow. Over the course of five major operations spanning 45 hours, doctors gave him an ultimatum: become a double amputee, or keep his legs knowing they would have compromised function and severe cramping for the rest of his life.

Against medical advice, Kjell chose to keep his legs.

Through relentless weight training, determination, and sheer force of will, he forced blood through the remaining network of tiny capillaries, achieving what many believed to be impossible. He proved the experts wrong until he was strong enough to “JUST WALK AWAY”

Even in his final days, many doctors could not fully explain how he had done it. Some referred to him as a walking miracle.

But it wasn’t a miracle.

It was unrelenting determination, self-belief, and extraordinary willpower.

That mindset didn’t just overcome the impossible, it gave Kjell more than four decades of life that he might otherwise never have had. More importantly, it gave him the chance to continue raising his five sons, whom he loved beyond words, and who loved him just as deeply.

In his final days, Kjell spoke often of how grateful he was for his bodybuilding and coaching career, for the life he built between the two countries he called home, Sweden and Australia, and for the opportunity to inspire and connect with people around the world through his iconic role as The Lord Humungus.

That legacy will never die.

“BE STILL, MY DOGS OF WAR… WE HAVE ALL LOST SOMEONE WE HAVE LOVED… BUT WE DO IT MY WAY. WE DO IT MY WAY.”

Kjell lived a colourful life on his own terms, with unwavering conviction, an adventurous heart, and a spirit that refused to surrender.

To all of his friends, fans, clients, and family: thank you. You made his life richer and fuller than you could ever know.

A ceremony will be held to honour his memory. The time, date, and location will be announced in due course.

With love and gratitude,

The Nilsson Family”

Per Page Six, Nilsson played the main villain in George Miller’s 1981 Mad Max sequel, which starred Mel Gibson.

He also appeared in The Pirate Movie in 1982, the TV movie Man of Letters in 1984, and The Edge of Power in 1989.

Before turning to acting, Nilsson moved from Sweden to Australia to train in weightlifting for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. While there, he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he later married in Sweden. Ferguson eventually encouraged him to return to Australia and try his hand at film.
