In the true spirit of competition, Blake Shelton is not letting any of his fellow Voice coaches miss out on his unique antics before he leaves next season … even if that person is his wife, Gwen Stefani.
In the latest episode of The Voice season 22, the country singer caused the No Doubt leading lady to shake with anger during an intense battle round. It went down when Gwen had team members Cara Brandisi and Jay Allen perform Don Henley and Stevie Nicks’ “Leather and Lace.”
Though she chose Cara as the winner, it didn’t mean she was ready to let go of Jay. In a double surprise twist, Gwen used her one save on him but she didn’t expect her husband to swoop in and rattle her.
“Honestly, that was such a hard one for me, and it was so confusing because I knew that I wanted to save Jay,” she said before Blake piped in with the ultimate Voice betrayal. “What if somebody steals Jay?”
Well, that was a move no one saw coming! Gwen might’ve been upset by Blake’s foul play, but Voice fans weren’t too mad about it.
“Blake is the heart, soul, raw talent, and comic relief of the show.” one person wrote on YouTube. “And this why Blake will be missed. I can’t imagine this show being as good or successful as it has been without Blake,” another viewer remarked. “Blake Shelton is everything and a legend,” a different fan added.
Folks may have not been completely shocked by Blake’s strategic move, but the key players on the NBC show certainly were. Host Carson Daly was shocked by the dramatic turn of events, screaming, “It’s a save against a steal between husband and wife!”
But in true Blake fashion, he eventually disclosed that the sudden steal was part of a plan he’d had all along. “I was gonna use my steal. I was just waiting for the perfect moment for a good zinger right there. I was like, ‘Wait till she says something — oh, that’ll be funny.’”
What was Gwen’s response to his plot? Well, it looks like Blake may need to watch out when he goes home. “My actual husband stabs me in the back. Blake is definitely gonna pay for that later,” she said on the show.
With all the tactics Blake’s pulled already this season, what else does he have up his sleeve? We’ll just have to wait to find out.
