Harrison Gilks, an 18-year-old from Fredericton, New Brunswick, who inspired thousands of people with his positive attitude towards life despite his terminal cancer diagnosis, has died. He had been documenting his cancer battle on TikTok and shared his bucket list items with his followers.
Gilks was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that starts in muscle cells, in November 2020. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer returned stronger than before in February 2022. Gilks began to check off items on his bucket list with the help of his local community and online donors. He was able to enjoy helicopter rides in New York and Jasper, meet Montreal Canadiens hockey stars, watch a Los Angeles Rams football game, and relax in Mexico.
On March 21, Gilks shared his final video on TikTok, where he talked about his experience in Mexico and his declining health. He was admitted to the hospital after his body started to give out, and the doctor informed him that he did not have much time left. He passed away a few days later with his family by his side. His brother, David, posted an update on TikTok, thanking everyone for their support and encouragement.
Following his death, the community showed support for Gilks with an event called “Sticks Out for Harrison.” Over 1,600 people posted photos and videos of hockey sticks on their doorstep in memory of the late athlete.
Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in children, but it can occur at any age. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 350 Canadians are diagnosed with this type of cancer each year.
Gilks’ story touched the hearts of many, and his positive attitude towards life in the face of adversity has been an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his courage, strength, and determination to live life to the fullest.
