Baby girl receives life-saving kidney from her father after devastating diagnosis

Every parent’s greatest hope is for their children to grow up healthy and enjoy a joyful childhood.

When Karen Rodas and Paul Bybkin welcomed their son Nathaniel into the world, their joy was tragically short-lived. Nathaniel survived for just 36 hours. He was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a condition that affects the kidneys and leads to the development of cysts. Sadly, this often results in kidney failure, which was the case with baby Nathaniel.

In 2013, the couple was overjoyed to have a daughter, Maddy. However, their greatest fear came true when Maddy was diagnosed with the same condition her brother had. Her stomach was so swollen that it resembled that of a woman nine months pregnant, and her parents were heartbroken.

Fortunately, this time there was a ray of hope, as Maddy was given a fresh chance at life, thanks to her father who donated one of his kidneys to her.

Prior to the life-altering surgery, little Maddy spent much of her life in hospitals and often slept up to 18 hours a day due to her condition.

The medical team informed the family that Maddy’s ability to enjoy a normal childhood hinged on finding a suitable kidney donor.

As fate would have it, her father was the perfect match!

“With both Paul and Maddy, two of the most treasured parts of my life, undergoing surgery, I was incredibly anxious,” Karen shared, according to The Mirror.

The operation was a resounding success, and both Maddy and Paul made full recoveries.

“Daddy’s kidney has given our little girl a new lease on life,” Karen remarked. “Now, she’s bursting with energy. Her previously large tummy is now just slightly rounded, and she’s a vibrant, healthy two-year-old.”

For Paul, the decision was simple – he did what he believed any father would do for their child.

“It’s been a whirlwind experience, but any father would have done the same, donating my kidney to Maddy. It’s part of being a parent,” he mentioned, according to The Mirror.

“Now we’re on a high, able to watch Maddy grow into a lively and healthy little girl.”

While Maddy might face another transplant surgery in roughly 25 years, she has many wonderful years ahead to live joyfully and completely.
