Billy Ray Cyrus’ adopted son urges him to ‘get help’ after Liberty Ball performance

Update, 1/26: After Trace Cyrus made a public plea to his adoptive father Billy Ray Cyrus to seek help, he is alleging that Billy Ray has threatened him with legal action in a second statement.

In the comments some fans urged Trace and Billy Ray to workout their relationship offline.

“This is messy. Not everything is meant for social media,” one comment read.

While others argued that this may be the only way Trace can communicate with Billy Ray.

Our original report begins below:

Billy Ray Cyrus’s family is worried about his health just days after performing at the Liberty Ball.

The 63-year-old “Achy Breaky Heart” singer was one of several artists to perform at the Liberty Ball on Jan. 20, but his performance went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Now, his family is speaking out in hopes that the iconic country singer will get the help he needs.

On Jan. 22, Billy Ray Cyrus’s adopted son, Trace Cyrus, took to Instagram to share an emotional letter to his dad alongside an old photo of the two performing on stage together.

“Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever. I wanted to be just like you,” Trace Cyrus wrote in the caption.

Trace Cyrus, a former member of the band Metro Station, even described the day Billy Ray Cyrus adopted him as the “happiest day” of his life.

But now, Trace Cyrus says his father is “barely recognizable.”

“It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you,” Trace Cyrus adds.

“You may be upset with me for posting this but I really could care less at this point. Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” he continues.

Trace Cyrus was referring to his sister, Brandi Cyrus, and half-sisters, Noah and Miley Cyrus, both of whom rose to fame on the Disney show “Hannah Montana” alongside her father.

Trace and Brandi Cyrus were both adopted by Billy Ray Cyrus following his marriage to Trish Cyrus, according to People.

The former couple, who divorced in 2022, went on to welcome three kids of their own, including daughters Miley and Noah, and son Braison Cyrus.

“Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better,” Trace Cyrus wrote on Instagram.

“We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it,” he adds.

Despite the honesty, Trace Cyrus wants his dad to know that he’s still there for him — as he always has been.

“As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon,” Trace Cyrus continues.

While he admits that he doesn’t know what his father is struggling with right now, he says he has a “pretty good idea” and would love to help — but only if his dad “would open up and receive the help.”

“Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you,” Trace Cyrus concludes.

Billy Ray Cyrus doubles down on his Liberty Ball performance

Trace Cyrus’s emotional letter comes just a few days after Billy Ray Cyrus was criticized for his concerning, low-energy and technical-difficulty-riddled performance at the Liberty Ball.

The Liberty Ball was one of several inaugural festivities President Donald Trump attended after taking oath on Jan. 20.

“In life, when you have technical difficulties, you just gotta keep going, or as President Trump would say, ‘You gotta fight,’” Billy Ray Cyrus said during his disastrous performance.

On Jan. 22, as concern grew, Billy Ray Cyrus doubled down on his performance in a statement shared by People.

“I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me,” Billy Ray Cyrus wrote.

“I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says, ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell,” he added.

The “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” singer also posted a video of his performance on his Instagram page.

“This was the most fun part of the Liberty Ball! And if you didn’t see it… you just had to be there,” he wrote in the caption.

“I just don’t think you understand,” he added, referencing lyrics to his hit song “Achy Breaky Heart.”
