Renowned actor Andre Braugher, celebrated for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in the popular comedy-drama series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has tragically passed away at the age of 61.

The news of his demise, occurring on December 11, has left both his admirers and colleagues in mourning, as Braugher’s impactful career resonated with audiences, earning him a dedicated following.

The agent representing the TV luminary officially confirmed Braugher’s untimely death to Variety on the late evening of Tuesday, December 12. The actor had been grappling with a ‘brief illness’ leading up to his poignant departure. Throughout his illustrious career, Braugher, a father of three, had garnered widespread acclaim for his portrayals of tough-talking law enforcement figures, solidifying his status as a versatile and respected actor.

Braugher’s role as the stoic Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine not only endeared him to a new generation of fans but also earned him recognition in the form of 11 Emmy Award nominations. Notably, four of these nominations were specifically attributed to his outstanding portrayal of Holt in the beloved sitcom, alongside co-stars Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti, and Marc Evan Jackson.

Born in Chicago, Braugher’s journey to stardom commenced after studying theatre at Stanford University and attending the drama division at Juilliard in New York. His breakthrough came in 1989 with a role in the war thriller Glory, sharing the screen with luminaries such as Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.
