Buckingham Palace Announces King’s National Address for VJ Day Anniversary

The King Prepares a Touching Message for the Nation

Next week holds a significant moment, as Buckingham Palace has revealed that King Charles will speak to the nation to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. This occasion commemorates the day Japan surrendered to the Allied forces in 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marking the end of the Second World War.

A Special Message from King Charles

To honor this pivotal moment in history, the King has already prepared a heartfelt audio message that will be broadcast on August 15th. This message precedes a remembrance service that King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend, alongside Second World War veterans and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Honoring the Brave Service Members

The ceremony, which the BBC will broadcast live, aims to honor all who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre during the war. This includes individuals such as Burma Star recipients, British Indian Army veterans, former prisoners of war, and soldiers who fought in critical battles like Kohima and Imphal in India. Organized by the Royal British Legion with the support of the Government, the event will see the King and Queen lay floral tributes alongside other principal dignitaries.

A Finale of Respect and Remembrance

The day’s commemoration will reach a poignant moment with a national two-minute silence. This reflective pause will culminate with an impressive aerial display by the Red Arrows, followed by a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. King Charles and Queen Camilla will then join the veterans at a reception, adding a personal touch to the day of remembrance.

Supporting Events Across the Nation

As the day unfolds, other members of the royal family will also partake in various commemorative services. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will participate in a service at the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle, an event organized by Royal British Legion Scotland. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will attend the Far East Prisoners of War VJ Day 80th Anniversary Service at Norwich Cathedral and then a second memorial for the Children and Families of Far East Prisoners of War in Suffolk.

Reflecting on Personal Sacrifices and Stories

Prior to VJ Day, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will meet Jim Wren, a Second World War veteran who served aboard HMS Repulse and was captured and detained on the Indonesian island of Sumatra until the conflict’s conclusion. Such personal stories illuminate the immense sacrifices made by so many during the war.

A Memorable End to the Commemorations

The commemorations will continue into the autumn, culminating with a special veterans’ reception at Windsor Castle. This closing event will serve as a fitting tribute to all those who suffered and fought for freedom, ensuring their legacy is honored and remembered.
