We almost went without Chris Young’s music — but thankfully, doctors saved his life.
In a recent interview with Sirius XM, the “Famous Friends” singer opened up about the near-death experience that almost killed him. If you’re unaware, in 2013, Young abruptly fell ill from a leg infection that forced him to go to the hospital.
“I had a cut, like a tiny cut, on my leg that somehow got infected and I didn’t know it was infected,” he began. According to Young, he “didn’t feel great” when he woke up and was experiencing “vision issues.” However, he had to perform later that day.
“I went to get on the plane anyway because we were going to the middle of nowhere, and I was like ‘If I’m going to miss this flight, then I’m going to miss this show. In mid-air, I started feeling like the worst I’ve ever felt in my life, and I was in septic shock.”
“They got me to the hospital. They put me immediately into the ICU and they’re like, ‘We’re going to have to operate on you but we’re not going to do it today, we’re going to do it tomorrow.’” However, according to Young, once doctors reviewed his blood work, he was in trouble. At the time, his blood pressure was so low that doctors thought his organ was on the verge of failing.
Moreover, Young says that just before his surgery, a doctor left him with a bone-chilling remark. As doctors prepped Young for surgery, she left him with something he’d never forget. “Say your prayers to whatever God you believe in, just in case you don’t wake up.”
However, this wouldn’t be Chris Young’s only brush with death. In 2017, the Tennessee native went through another traumatic experience during the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. During the festival, a gunman shot at the crowd from a nearby hotel, leaving 58 people dead. Thankfully, Young was backstage at the time of the shooting.
“It was really scary,” he said at the time. “You know, I called my mom and my sister in the middle of the night…to kinda tell ’em, ‘Hey, I’m in Las Vegas. You guys know I’m here. I’m all right.’ It was definitely a moment of always tell the people you love you love ’em as much as possible.”
