Donald Trump discusses potential return to White House in 2028 using a ‘loophole’
Donald Trump has recently expressed his intention to pursue a possible third presidential term in 2028, suggesting that a so-called ‘loophole’ might make it feasible. During a conversation with NBC’s Kristen Welker, the former U.S. President emphasized that he is not joking about a potential comeback, affirming his commitment to explore every avenue to make it happen.

Understanding the U.S. Presidential Term Limits
The United States Constitution clearly states that a person cannot be elected as president more than twice. Specifically, it says: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
The article further clarifies that these limitations would not apply to anyone who was already holding the presidency when this amendment was introduced. Despite these clear terms, Trump has expressed his intent to look for a ‘loophole’ that might allow him to bypass the rules. He asserts that there is a significant demand for his leadership, with many supporters encouraging him to consider serving a third term.

Exploring Possible Strategies
When asked about how this might be feasible, Trump did not shy away from sharing a potential strategy hinted by NBC’s Welker. She suggested that JD Vance, his Vice President, could potentially run for the presidency with Trump serving as Vice President under him. In such a scenario, Vance could resign, allowing Trump to assume the presidency once again. Trump acknowledged this possibility as one option: “That’s one.”
He added, however, that there are other ideas which he did not disclose, reiterating the early stages of his current focus. Trump stated, “I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
He indicated his eagerness to serve until 2033, expressing his enjoyment of the work: “I like working.” Despite his openness about the desire, he admitted it is too soon to fully plan for a third term, remarking: “I’m not joking. But I’m not – it is far too early to think about it.”

Hints of a Potential Third Term
This is not the first time Trump has alluded to the possibility of a third term. Following his recent election victory over Kamala Harris, he hinted at such a possibility during a private meeting with House Republicans in November. The New York Times reported that he had teased: “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out’.”
Moreover, speaking at a National Rifle Association event, Trump humorously questioned whether a potential win would count as a third presidential term, stating: “I don’t know, are we going to be considered three-term or two-term? Are we three-term or two-term if we win?”
