Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union address of his second term this Monday. Known for his spirited speeches, this one was no exception. He passionately addressed issues like the economy, Democratic opposition, and veterans. However, what really caught people’s attention was an unexpected light quip directed at First Lady Melania Trump.

Depending on one’s political leanings, Trumpโs address was either a monumental success or a long-winded effort. His speech lasted an impressive one hour and 48 minutes, marking it as the longest in recent history. Within those moments, Trump didnโt shy away from highlighting what he sees as America’s triumphs under his leadership, while also playfully acknowledging his relationship with Melania.
A key part of his speech was when he paused to mention his wife, the First Lady. Trump highlighted Melaniaโs remarkable efforts over the last year, which included initiatives in foster care and advocating for AI. He spoke about her new Amazon documentary, but it was his humorous comment about Melaniaโs popularity that sparked the most chatter.
Donald Trump Lights Up the Room with a Quip at Melania
Trump took the time to commend Melania for her impactful work. He noted, “Nobody cares more about protecting Americaโs youth than our first lady โ sheโs now a movie star, can you believe it? Who wouldโve believed that?” He praised her for championing AI legislation, advancing a historic executive order on foster care, and securing $30 million for the Melania Trump foster youth to independence initiative.
Then came the remark that spurred discussions: “Itโs a really tremendous thing that happened and she got a lot of bipartisan support. She gets much better bipartisan support than I do. I get none, she gets a lot. Some day youโre going to have to tell me how you did that!”
Understanding Melania Trump’s Appeal Across Party Lines
Trump alluded to the fact that Melania enjoys greater bipartisan support than he does, framing it as a gentle jest rather than a critique of her. To some, it seemed more like a sign of his admiration for Melaniaโs ability to reach across the political divide.
Despite this, recent polls indicate that Melania’s approval rating is not particularly high. A YouGov survey reveals that she currently has a negative approval rating, which is lower than that of many former First Ladies. Her approval rating stands at -16, which is behind Jill Bidenโs -9, though she does slightly outperform Hillary Clinton, who is rated at -17.
In contrast, historical First Ladies seem to be held in warmer regard. Nancy Reagan boasts an approval rating of +25, Lady Bird Johnson +23, Rosalynn Carter +32, and Barbara Bush +21. Moreover, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush are both rated +21 and +19, respectively.
