Famous Award Winning Chef Has Passed Away At Age 45

In early May 2024, James Kent, a highly respected chef, marked his 45th birthday by sharing lovely moments on Instagram. The snapshots showcased his family—his children and wife, Kelly. In the caption, he expressed, “In my happy place with the people I love, celebrating my 45th spin on this planet. I take birthday wishes seriously these days and wish love, health, and happiness.”

Heartbreakingly, Kent will no longer make such wishes, as he has sadly passed away.

Saga Hospitality Group announced the sad news on Instagram, just shortly after Kent celebrated his birthday. They shared, “We are heartbroken to share that James Kent passed away unexpectedly earlier today,” alongside a picture of the beloved chef.

Kent was the culinary genius behind some of New York City’s most acclaimed restaurants, including Saga, Crown Shy, and Overstory. As a mark of respect and mourning, these restaurants were closed on Father’s Day. The Saga Hospitality Group declared, “Crown Shy, Saga and Overstory will be closed tomorrow: Sunday, June 16th. Celebrate Father’s Day with your loved ones.”

Although Saga Hospitality did not specify the cause of his passing in their post, a representative conveyed to ABC News that Kent died of a heart attack.

Many took to Instagram to express their condolences, reminiscing about how Kent positively influenced their lives. One poignant comment stated, “We are so completely heartbroken chef. You taught so many of us how to enjoy every moment of life and work, no matter what the challenge. You’ve been such a positive force in so so many lives. Rest in peace my friend. Your love will carry on.”

Kent was genuinely passionate about his culinary craft. Below is a video where he reveals the intricacies of creating a stunning 7-course tasting menu at Saga, located on the 63rd floor of a New York skyscraper.

The New York Times shared that Kent is survived by his loving wife Kelly, whom he adored since high school, and their beautiful children, Gavin and Avery. His legacy also includes his devoted parents, two older brothers, and a sister.
