Former Child Star Blake Garrett Passes Away at 33 After Medical Emergency

Blake Garrett, who warmed our hearts as a child actor, has sadly passed away at the young age of 33. Known especially for his charming role as Plug in the 2006 family comedy How to Eat Fried Worms, Blake’s departure leaves a poignant void.

He took his final bow on Sunday, February 8, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His grieving mother, Carol Garrett, shared the devastating news with a heavy heart, noting that while the family awaits the official autopsy results, the cause of his passing remains unknown.

Nolan Blake Garrett, born in the vibrant city of Austin, Texas, was a natural on the stage from a young age. His early adventures in theater saw him enchant audiences in beloved productions such as Aladdin and His Magical Lamp and Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Tribute. His talent further flourished in classics like The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Grease. At a tender age of 10, he captivated audiences across the nation in Barney’s Colorful World International Tour, a testament to his prodigious talent.

Most fans, however, know Blake from his delightful appearance in How to Eat Fried Worms. The film, cherished by families, tells the quirky tale of a new kid at school who makes a daring bet to eat worms without vomiting as he navigates schoolyard challenges. Garrett’s charming portrayal as Plug, part of a young ensemble, earned them a Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble Cast. It remains a nostalgic gem for those who grew up during that era.

In recent years, Blake had made Oklahoma his home. According to his mother, he celebrated three years of sobriety, a milestone achieved through sheer determination, something for which he was immensely proud.

Concern arose when Blake recently visited the emergency room due to severe pain and was diagnosed with shingles. Carol expressed her concern that Blake might have tried self-medicating to manage the discomfort, and she frets his passing could have been a tragic accident.

Those who knew him remember a man steadily rebuilding his life and focused on maintaining a positive, sober path forward.

At just 33, Blake Garrett, full of talent and promise, left us too soon.

Rest in peace, dear Blake.
