General Hospital’s Leslie Charleson Passes Away at Age 79

Remembering Leslie Charleson

Fans and colleagues are mourning the loss of Leslie Charleson, the cherished former star of ‘General Hospital’, who has passed away at the age of 79.

Frank Valentini, the executive producer of ‘General Hospital’, conveyed the sad news through the show’s official Instagram account on a somber Sunday, January 12.

“With a heavy heart, I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson,” he expressed. “Leslie’s legacy is remarkable, spanning nearly five decades on ‘General Hospital’. Just as Monica was the core of the Quartermaines, Leslie was the treasured matriarch of the entire team.”

Valentini’s message was accompanied by a heartwarming photo of the smiling four-time Daytime Emmy nominee. “I will profoundly miss our daily conversations, her sharp humor, and her incredible presence on set,” Valentini further noted. “On behalf of everyone at ‘General Hospital’, my deepest condolences go out to her family and friends during this sorrowful time.”

Leslie’s Remarkable Journey

Leslie Charleson began her iconic portrayal of Monica Quartermaine in 1977, establishing herself as the longest-serving cast member of ‘General Hospital’.

“I started the show on the day Elvis Presley passed away. Being a huge fan, it was tough driving to the studio that day. When I got there, amidst the turmoil, I was told it was hoped I brought my own wardrobe and makeup due to a strike,” Charleson shared with Soap Opera Digest in 2022.

She recalled the initial hesitance from others on set, noting the tense environment, as she stepped into the shoes of Monica, previously played by Patsy Rahn.

After a long-standing stint on the show, Charleson transitioned to a recurring role in 2010. Despite facing various health challenges, she made several memorable returns to the show — most notably appearing in a wheelchair in December 2023.

Legacy and Reflections

While speaking to Soap Opera Digest in 2016, Charleson reflected fondly on her enduring journey. Married to Bill Demms from 1988 until 1991, she remained devoted to her career and her fans.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” she remarked. “I’ve stayed here while others have moved on, making ‘General Hospital’ my home since the very beginning, many years ago. I’m genuinely grateful for this enduring opportunity to continue doing what I love.”

Leslie’s passing has touched those who knew her best, reminding everyone of the indelible mark she left on the soap opera world as well as in the hearts of her audience and peers alike.
