George Clooney Responds to Donald Trump After Criticism Over French Citizenship

George Clooney, alongside his wife Amal and their two children, has recently made a big move by leaving the United States. The family has been granted French citizenship, a development that did not sit well with former President Donald Trump. Taking to Truth Social, Trump expressed his displeasure, prompting a response from Clooney.

George Clooney has always had a fondness for Europe. He is well-known to own a beautiful property in the scenic Lake Como area, and in 2021, he expanded his European roots by purchasing the Domaine du Canadel, a charming former wine estate located near Brignoles, in southern France.

According to Clooney, his family finds their utmost joy in Europe, particularly in France. Over recent years, the family has divided their time between countries, but with the acquisition of French citizenship, it appears they will now make it a full-time home.

The famed actor, best known for his role in the Oceans trilogy, has often praised the privacy laws in France, which provide a respite from unwanted media attention and allow him to raise his children away from the glitz of Hollywood.

Donald Trump’s Critical Comments

George Clooney has never shied away from expressing his political opinions, particularly his criticism of Donald Trump. This move to France seemingly escalated tensions, resulting in Trump airing his grievances on December 31 on Truth Social. The former president dubbed it as “good news,” albeit not in the praising way.

Trump commented on the Clooneys’ new citizenship with a critical tone, connecting France’s challenges to the decision, “George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators, have officially become citizens of a country struggling with crime due to terrible immigration policies,” Trump wrote.

Further, Trump dismissed Clooney’s Hollywood career as insignificant, arguing, “Clooney got more headlines for his political views than for his acting, and he never was the movie star he’s made out to be.”

George Clooney’s Response

Despite the harsh words, Clooney remained unfazed. According to Deadline, he responded with a statement that lightly turned Trump’s slogan on its head, “I fully agree with the current former president. We should make America great again โ€“ starting this November,” referencing the upcoming elections.

In conversation with Variety, Clooney recalled the days before Trump entered politics, when their relationship was more amicable. “We knew each other quite well,” Clooney shared. “He used to call me to lend a hand like getting into a hospital. He was a big goof. But then, everything changed.”
