Jimmy Kimmel’s Return Hits a Snag as Key Stations Say No to Airing His Show

Jimmy Kimmel’s return to television has encountered an unexpected hurdle. Despite Disney’s big announcement about the host’s comeback, some major ABC affiliates are taking a stand and choosing not to broadcast his show.

Mixed Reactions over Controversial Decision

The recent and shocking departure of conservative figure Charlie Kirk has left a lasting impact on various sectors, including everyday individuals, politicians, and the television industry.

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show was taken off the air abruptly after he made controversial remarks concerning Kirk’s death and comments on Donald Trump’s take on the matter. These comments led to ABC pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air indefinitely.

The decision has stirred diverse opinions. While some commended the move, others, particularly celebrities, criticized it as a blow to free speech.

However, on a recent Monday, Disney expressed that Kimmel would be making a return to the screen. The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, shared in a statement dated September 22:

“Last Wednesday, we decided to halt the show’s production to prevent escalating an already delicate situation during an emotional period for our nation. We made this choice because we believed some remarks were poorly timed and insensitive. Over recent days, we’ve had meaningful discussions with Jimmy, leading to the decision to bring back the show on Tuesday.”

Challenges Ahead for the Return

Kimmel’s planned comeback faces new challenges.

Sinclair Inc., operating numerous local ABC affiliate stations and known for its conservative views, opted to proceed differently. The company opted to replace his show with local news programming in nearly 40 significant TV markets, citing their programming aligns with a more conservative agenda.

“Starting Tuesday night, Sinclair will substitute Jimmy Kimmel Live! with news programming across our ABC affiliates. Ongoing discussions with ABC will determine the show’s possible return,” Sinclair announced.

Conditions for Resuming Broadcast

A preemption happens when affiliates swap national broadcasts with their unique content. Sinclair has set specific terms before allowing Kimmel’s return.

They have demanded “formal talks… with ABC about their commitment to professionalism and accountability.” Furthermore, they want Kimmel to “deliver a sincere apology to the Kirk family” and make a “substantial personal donation” to them and Turning Point USA.

“Irrespective of ABC’s intentions for the program’s future, Sinclair is adamant about not resurging Jimmy Kimmel Live! on our networks until we can ensure the standards expected of a national broadcast platform are upheld,” Sinclair further added.

For the moment, fans of Jimmy Kimmel await eagerly as his awaited return remains uncertain, with his show’s future in limbo and questions about when or if it will be back on their screens.
