Update: On Monday, May 19, Joe Biden spoke out personally for the first time since his cancer diagnosis was made publicly.
Alongside a picture of himself and his wife Jill Biden, the former president wrote, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
On Sunday, May 18, the office of former President Joe Biden shared a statement regarding his health.
According to the statement, per NBC News, after undergoing a routine physical examination where doctors discovered a “small nodule” further test discovered cancer.
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” the statement released by the president’s personal office revealed.
“On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” NBC News reports.
The statement categorized the cancer as aggressive, but revealed the former president is reviewing treatment options.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement continued. “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
