Joe Biden, the former President, alongside his wife, Jill Biden, made a significant journey to Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City early Saturday morning. They attended the solemn occasion of Pope Francis’ funeral. As they arrived, the 82-year-old Biden, a figure who had previously shared personal interactions with the Pope, was seen carefully descending the steps with the support of his wife and a priest.

This former President, holding the distinction of being the second Roman Catholic to serve in the White House following John F. Kennedy, found a seat among foreign dignitaries. Due to the seating arrangements reserved for current heads of state, President Biden and Jill were seated away from former President Donald Trump.

Joe Biden and Pope Francis have crossed paths on notable occasions throughout Biden’s political journey. Their initial meeting was during the Pope’s visit to Washington DC, where Francis addressed a joint session of Congress with Biden notably positioned behind Pope Francis in the Capitol.
More recently, in June 2024, Biden met Pope Francis once again while attending the G7 summit in Italy, thereby reinforcing their mutual connection through these significant gatherings.
On the morning of the funeral, Biden was observed capturing memories, taking a selfie with a fellow mourner, capturing a moment ahead of the service that started at 10 a.m.
The news of Pope Francis’ passing prompted heartfelt reflections from Biden. Offering his condolences, Biden expressed deep admiration, saying Francis was truly unparalleled during his tenure as the spiritual leader.
“Pope Francis will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of our time and I am better for having known him,” shared Biden. He praised the Pope for his inclusive nature and efforts to make everyone feel welcome within the Church.
Biden commended Pope Francis for championing causes of equity, combating poverty, and striving to alleviate global suffering. In Biden’s words, “He was the People’s Pope – a light of faith, hope, and love.” His acknowledgment highlighted the enduring impact of Pope Francis’ mission and vision.
