With a career spanning over four decades, Goldie Hawn has made an impact on many — especially, of course, her own daughter Kate Hudson, who has followed in her footsteps with a successful acting career of her own.
The two, though of different generations, know all too well the hurdles women in the industry face, from ageism, to harassment, to double standards, and unequal pay.
Luckily for Kate, she had a great hand to guide her through, and now has plenty of stories – good and bad – to tell from both her own experiences and her mom’s.
Sitting down with Kelly Ripa for her newly launched podcast with Sirius XM, Let’s Talk Off Camera, Kate came to her mom’s defense and gave her a sweet shout-out for enduring unfair treatment from co-stars and Hollywood big shots alike.
Looking back at her mom’s success and work on movies such as Overboard, First Wives Club, and Cactus Flower – for which she won her first and only Oscar – she said: “She had to really fight for a lot of these movies to be made [and] was seen by a lot of people as difficult and complicated because she had a point of view.”
Kate added: “She decided to tell people that told her to stay in her lane to go [expletive] themselves and basically started producing her own movies, which wasn’t happening at the time.”
She even revealed that she recently met a man who had worked with Goldie in the past, and brazenly called her “challenging” to her own daughter’s face.
Kate recalled: “He was sort of saying that she was challenging and I remember thinking, ‘You know, that’s funny, but was she right about what you thought was her being difficult?’” adding: “And he was like, ‘Oh yeah, I mean she was definitely right. The whole script needed a complete rewrite.’”
She noted: “She really was just trying to say, ‘Hey guys we should probably relook at the script,” continuing: “And that is considered complicated. Especially in the 1970s and 1980s in Hollywood.”
The Oscar-nominated actress didn’t end the conversation without praising her mom for her endurance even through the sexist hurdles she faced, and told Kelly: “I saw her strength. I saw her conviction. She’s so determined. I mean she’s really unbelievable.”
