He was performing his song ‘The Fighter’ and instead of the usual line, “When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter,” he sang, “When they’re tryna’ get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”
He was apparently referencing his guitarist, Maggie Baugh, who marked the moment on her Instagram by posting a video with the caption, “Did he just say that?” Fans had mixed feelings about this change, especially since the song was reportedly inspired by his relationship with Nicole.
However, Keith Urban is now enlightening fans that this isn’t the first occasion he has modified his performance lyrics, encouraging listeners not to jump to conclusions based on these changes.
At his Nashville concert, the concluding event of his High and Alive World Tour, Keith took a moment to address these rumors before singing ‘You’ll Think Of Me.’
“I’ve been performing it this way for a long time,” he mentioned, noting another instance where he altered lyrics to “but I betcha’ think about me” from the original “but you’ll think of me.”
PEOPLE magazine has also highlighted that this behavior of changing lyrics is not new for Urban. Back in 2017, he sang a different version of ‘The Fighter’ alongside Carrie Underwood at the CMT Music Awards, singing, “Carrie Underwood, I’m gonna be your fighter!”
‘The Fighter’ has sentimental value, as it was penned during the early phases of Keith and Nicole’s relationship. In an interview from 2017, Urban explained, “It is from a talk my wife and I had early on. During tough times, I wanted to hold her tight and care for her.”
