It’s been more than 18 years since the world was first gripped by the mysterious disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal. This event sparked an international search and widespread media attention that has yet to dim completely.

Recently, a significant development has reignited both public interest and the hopes of finding answers.
On June 3, law enforcement teams from Germany and Portugal initiated a new search in the Algarve region, an area connected to Christian Brueckner, a convicted sex offender. Brueckner has been the main suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance since 2020, although no charges have been formally brought against him concerning her case.
This new endeavor targets the land between Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was last known to be in 2007, and a small property that was once leased by Brueckner.

Reports indicate that approximately 30 officers from Germany, alongside forensic experts, have joined Portuguese authorities to support the investigation. Roadways have been blocked, and temporary structures have sprung up in the rural landscapes close to the residence previously linked to Brueckner.
According to a Portuguese insider cited in The Mirror, the search’s grim objective is straightforward: they are searching specifically for any signs of Madeleine’s remains.
Detective’s Doubts
Mark Williams-Thomas, a former British detective with extensive familiarity with the case, shared his somber outlook on X. He said, “The police in Portugal are conducting a search for the German team around the farm building rented by Christian B (CB). The focus is to find evidence of Madeleine McCann’s body.” He mentioned it had been 10 months prior to her disappearance that CB was last spotted at that location.
Williams-Thomas expressed skepticism about the search’s potential success, stating, “I doubt any evidence will be found.”
This operation marks the first major search for Madeleine on Portuguese soil in over two years. The last, dating back to May 2023, focused on the distant Arade Dam — labeled by some as Brueckner’s “little paradise” — but it yielded no new findings.
Other searches throughout the years have similarly drawn blanks. Notably, in 2020, wells were examined by Portuguese police. In 2014, British teams employed cutting-edge technology and dogs trained to detect cadavers in Praia da Luz, acting on a hunch that burglars could have fatally harmed Madeleine during a robbery. None of these efforts brought about fruitful results.
This current operation, reportedly initiated at the behest of German authorities, received official approval from Portugal’s justice department. Although not directly participating, the UK’s Metropolitan Police worded its official position as supportive: “We are informed about the searches conducted by the BKA (German federal police) in Portugal within the context of their investigation into Madeleine McCann’s case,” a spokesperson relayed.
“While not participating in the search, the Metropolitan Police Service offers support for our international colleagues where needed.”
If no substantial discoveries emerge, the planned duration of the search is estimated to last roughly three days.
Spotlight on the Suspect
Christian Brueckner, now aged 48, is currently incarcerated in Germany, serving a seven-year sentence due to a 2005 rape incident in Praia da Luz — a mere two years before Madeleine vanished. He has consistently denied any involvement in her disappearance, yet German prosecutors assert he continues to remain their central suspect.
Recently, Brueckner was acquitted on unrelated charges of sexual crimes, heightening concerns he might escape if not promptly charged. Back in 2020, legal bodies in Germany felt the pressure for expedited charges related to this case, but even after four years, no formal accusations have transpired.

Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine’s parents, have relentlessly pursued closure, driven by the hope of uncovering the truth. May 2025 highlighted the somber milestone of 18 years since Madeleine’s mysterious disappearance, shortly followed by what should have been her 22nd birthday.
In an emotional statement, they shared, “Regardless of how near or distant she might be, she remains in our hearts every day, especially on her special day. We shall always celebrate her beauty and uniqueness.”
“We miss her dearly.”
As the Portuguese soil is unearthed once again, the world watches — eagerly hoping for resolution, while fearing further heartbreak, and remembering the enchanting little girl who vanished, leaving an indelible mark on so many.
