In spite of her success on the television sitcom “The Brady Bunch,” Maureen McCormick struggled mostly in her personal life in the years after the series’ end.
Addictions to drugs and bouts of depression and bulimia, all added to McCormick losing her reputation for reliability as an actress.
“I was treated in a psych ward, went in and out of rehab, and looked to God for answers.”
In her 2008 autobiography, “Here’s the Story,” which debuted at number four on The New York Times bestseller list, the actress reportedly says her life turned into the perfect opposite of her character.
“I had played Marcia Brady for five years. But I wasn’t her in any way, shape or form. She was perfect. I was anything but that,” she wrote.
McCormick, who had a perky and famous personality in “The Brady Bunch,” then uncovered in her book how she got deeper and deeper into Hollywood’s drug scene.
“I sought refuge in seemingly glamorous cocaine dens above Hollywood,” McCormick wrote. ” I thought I would find answers there, while in reality I was simply running farther from myself. From there, I spiralled downward on a path of self-destruction that cost me my career and very nearly my life.”
She added, “Over the years I battled drug addiction and bulimia. I was treated in a psych ward, went in and out of rehab, and looked to God for answers.”
McCormick continued that she traded sex for drugs with a Hollywood cocaine dealer. There was also a time that in exchange for drugs, she permitted an older man to videotape her naked.
“If there was coke, I had to stay up and do every last flake even if it meant going without sleep for days,” she wrote. “Nothing else mattered.”
In 1985, McCormick tied the knot with Michael Cummings. The two fell in love upon meeting in a church. The actress went through a series of interventions, stints in rehab, and experimental therapies subsequent to getting hitched.
The couple now shares one child — Natalie Michelle. The family lives in Westlake Village, northwest of Los Angeles.
