In a rare move, First Lady Melania Trump has voiced her thoughts following the tragic shooting of Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot by ICE and Border Patrol agents this past weekend.
The incident, which took place in Minnesota on Saturday, January 7, has drawn significant public attention and debate. Pretti was reportedly pepper-sprayed, restrained, and ultimately shot dead by the agents. This occurrence echoes the recent events surrounding the death of Renee Good, under similarly troubling circumstances.

The reaction to Pretti’s death has been one of widespread outrage. Several video recordings seem to contradict the initial statements by the Department of Homeland Security, which suggested Pretti posed a threat to the agents. Although Pretti was carrying a firearm with a legal permit, reports indicate that it remained holstered until an officer removed it from himโafter which time, he was shot.

The positioning of Pretti as a โdomestic terroristโ by White House advisor Stephen Miller and former CBP commander Gregory Bovino has also ignited significant backlash, similar to the narrative surrounding Renee Good’s tragic death.
In response to the public’s reaction, the White House began to reassess its initial narrative, which seemed to insinuate that Pretti’s actions led to his demise. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt referred to Pretti’s death as a โtragedy,โ while President Donald Trump announced a review of the incident.
In her statement, Melania Trump made an emotional appeal for unity, expressing her desire for peaceful protests and collaboration between different governmental leaders. โWe need to unify. Iโm calling for unity,โ she stated, mentioning a productive conversation between her husband, the president, and both the governor and mayor. โIโm against violence, so if you protest, protest in peace,โ she concluded.
The future of Minneapolis and broader Minnesota remains uncertain. President Trump revealed plans to send Tom Homan, his โborder tsar,โ to oversee a new initiative named Operation Metro Surge, with Homan reporting directly to the President.
Amidst these developments, Alex Pretti’s family has voiced their anger and sorrow over what they describe as falsehoods coming from the Trump administration regarding their son’s actions during the shooting incident.
In a deeply emotional statement, they remembered Alex as someone who aspired to make a positive difference. โAlex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact,โ they lamented, adding, โThe sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpโs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs.โ
They described a heart-wrenching scene from the event, stating, โHe has his phone in his right hand, and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper-sprayed.โ
What are your thoughts on Melania Trump’s appeal for unity? Is unity possible in todayโs political environment? Feel free to share your opinions on this matter.
