back on 19 May, President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act into law. This initiative is particularly meaningful to Melania, who had advocated for it in Congress just two months prior.
This new law makes it a federal offense to ‘knowingly publish’ or threaten to release intimate images without permission, inclusive of AI-generated content known as ‘deepfakes’ and acts often labeled as ‘revenge p-orn’.
What made waves was Melania adding her signature to this bill. Traditionally, a first lady does not sign legislation because she is not an elected figure, which means her signature holds no legal weight.
Despite this, Melania was encouraged by her husband to sign the bill, a decision that sparked considerable backlash on social media.
One user on platform X criticized the act by stating, “Trump urged Melania, who holds no constitutional authority, to sign legislation during a White House ceremony.”
In agreement, another chimed in: “Exactly my thoughts!”
The public was baffled as to why Melania had signed at a legislative ceremony. One individual questioned, “Why is Melania Trump signing legislation? Imagine the MAGA response if Dr. Jill Biden had done this.”
Similarly, someone else wondered what the reaction would be if the current president, Joe Biden, took such a step.
Inquiries were also raised regarding the ‘validity’ of her signature, with another user speculating on the uproar that would ensue if Jill Biden acted similarly.
The controversy surfaced just as Donald and Melania Trump marked 200 days in the presidential role for the second time in eight years.
Since resuming her responsibilities in January, Melania Trump has participated in a variety of high-profile events. She was present at the 250th anniversary Army parade in Washington and gave a speech at the International Women of Courage Awards.
In addition to state ceremonies, Melania attended high-profile events like the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, a performance of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Centre, and paid respects at Pope Francis’ funeral, where the president faced his own round of critique over what he wore.
Business Insider notes that Melania has been a regular presence at public White House engagements, averaging one to three appearances per month since returning to Washington.
Despite her visible role, The New York Times revealed that Melania spent fewer than 14 days at the President’s Palace during the first 108 days of her husband’s second term, suggesting that her recent actions have not gone unnoticed.
