Michael J. Fox, the cherished actor known for his iconic role in Back to the Future, continues his courageous journey with Parkinson’s disease. Over the weekend, he swapped roles to become a proud father cheering for his daughter. His 24-year-old daughter, Esmé Fox, took on the ambitious New York Marathon, and Michael couldn’t resist sharing a precious photo of their meeting spot along the marathon path.
Michael J. Fox has been fighting Parkinson’s for several decades. His diagnosis came in 1991 when he was just 29, and he bravely made it public seven years later. By the year 2000, he had set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a beacon of hope and support for many facing the same battle.
Life presents daily challenges for Michael J. Fox, but his outlook remains positive and encouraging. In a recent chat with People Magazine, he shared insights about his health and the resilience he’s known for.
“Every morning, I wake up and assess what the day might hold, finding ways to adapt,” he explained. “Physical challenges keep coming, and I tackle them head-on. Whether it’s using a wheelchair frequently, which took some getting used to, or facing new hurdles, I persist.”
He continued with a smile, “I focus on the good moments and make the most of them.”
Though he announced his retirement from acting in 2020, Michael soon returned to the limelight. Known for his roles in Family Ties and Spin City, he recently unveiled his new book, Future Boy, and made a guest appearance on the award-nominated series Shrinking. His role, fittingly, was that of someone living with Parkinson’s.

Despite the life-altering reality of Parkinson’s, Michael J. Fox finds immense support among his family. Together with his wife, Tracy Pollan, they share a family of three daughters and one son. Esmé, their youngest, was born in November 2001. In 2013, Michael fondly spoke about how much Esmé reminds him of himself.
“Esmé is very much like me, the youngest of our family,” he shared with Good Housekeeping. “She has a book in her hand, is editing a film on her computer, or playing dress-up. On family vacations, she writes her own book about our adventures.”
Such words reveal a deep affection and pride Michael has for Esmé, capturing her creativity and zest for life.

Pondering on life’s unpredictability and the journey ahead, Michael shared, “One day I might feel I’ve run out of steam. I might wake up and simply decide it’s not a day to venture out. If that day arrives, I’ll accept it. I am 62 years old now.”
He added with a note of acceptance, “If I were to leave this world tomorrow, it would be early but not surprising. I don’t have fear of that.”
