Switzerlandโs national snowboard cross team is grieving the tragic loss of Olympian Sophie Hediger, who passed away at the age of 26 in an avalanche.ย The incident occurred on Monday in the mountain resort town of Arosa, Switzerland. The Swiss-Ski Federation confirmed her passing in a statement released on Tuesday according toย The New York Post.
โWe are stunned and our thoughts are with Sophieโs family, to whom we express our deepest condolences,โ federation CEO Walter Reusser said in a statement. โFor the Swiss Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie Hediger has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep an honorable memory of Sophie.โ

While details surrounding the tragedy remain scarce, the Swiss-Ski Federation announced that no additional information about the incident would be shared, respecting the wishes of Hedigerโs family.
From an early age, Hediger demonstrated a natural talent for snowboarding, carving out her path on the snow-covered mountains of Switzerland. Her passion for the sport and dedication to training propelled her to elite status, and she eventually earned a spot on Switzerlandโs national snowboard cross team.
Hedigerโs journey reached new heights when she competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Hediger participated in multiple events during the 2022 Winter Olympics, including the womenโs snowboard cross.During the 2023-24 season, she achieved two podium finishes in World Cup competitions.
