Switzerland’s national snowboard cross team is grieving the tragic loss of Olympian Sophie Hediger, who passed away at the age of 26 in an avalanche. The incident occurred on Monday in the mountain resort town of Arosa, Switzerland. The Swiss-Ski Federation confirmed her passing in a statement released on Tuesday according to The New York Post.

“We are stunned and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences,” federation CEO Walter Reusser said in a statement. “For the Swiss Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie Hediger has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep an honorable memory of Sophie.”

While details surrounding the tragedy remain scarce, the Swiss-Ski Federation announced that no additional information about the incident would be shared, respecting the wishes of Hediger’s family.

From an early age, Hediger demonstrated a natural talent for snowboarding, carving out her path on the snow-covered mountains of Switzerland. Her passion for the sport and dedication to training propelled her to elite status, and she eventually earned a spot on Switzerland’s national snowboard cross team.

Hediger’s journey reached new heights when she competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Hediger participated in multiple events during the 2022 Winter Olympics, including the women’s snowboard cross.During the 2023-24 season, she achieved two podium finishes in World Cup competitions.

Off the slopes, Hediger was known for her vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm, inspiring teammates and fans alike. Her love for the mountains and adventurous spirit were evident in every aspect of her life.
