Donald Trump Promises Cost Cuts But Sees Increased Expenditures in First 100 Days
Despite his commitment to cutting governmental expenses following his return to the presidency, Donald Trump’s inaugural 100 days back in office are marked by an astonishing surge in spending, outpacing the equivalent period from the preceding year.

Upon embarking on his second term in January, Trump assured sweeping reforms aimed at cutting costs and revamping the budget.
Assuming the role of the 47th president, Trump has been active in issuing numerous executive directives. These include bold actions such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and dissolving the Department of Education, both of which have sparked legal controversies.
In his quest to enhance federal efficiency, Trump appointed Tesla and SpaceX chief, Elon Musk, to spearhead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. This department aims to eradicate fiscal waste.
The DOGE claims its cost-cutting initiatives have saved a substantial $170 billion through varied strategies, including the liquidation of assets, nullification of contracts, fraud countermeasures, withdrawal of grants, and workforce reductions. Yet, these assertions are still awaiting independent validation.
Contrary to these cost-saving measures, a report from CBS News highlights that federal outlays during Trump’s opening 100 days have surpassed last year’s figures under President Biden by an incredible $220 billion.

An in-depth look at expenditure data from January to April 29 indicates that the government’s spending levels have reached highs unseen over the past decade, discounting the exceptional expenditure surge witnessed during the 2021 COVID-19 crisis.
What’s Driving This Surge in Spending?
A remarkable segment of this spending uptick is channeled into Medicare and Social Security programs, collectively reflecting an increase of over $37 billion from the previous year.
The Defense Department, Veterans Affairs, the Department of Agriculture, and interest on Treasury securities have also seen significant spending increases.
These ballooning expenses have sparked public debate, with reactions like this YouTube comment, laced with irony: “Looks like spending cuts are off the menu.”

In response to the growing expenditures, the administration has implemented sweeping workforce reductions across numerous agencies, affecting sectors including education.
Trump has justified these reductions as essential for eliminating what he deems as government excess.
Addressing the changes, Trump stated in late March, “We’re getting rid of the unnecessary weight,” as reported by The Independent. “In the months ahead, we aim to establish a committed team whose sole purpose is to support this administration and serve the nation.”
