Princess Diana’s Playful Letters Fetch High Prices at Auction

Even after all these years, many people across the globe still remember Princess Diana fondly. Her sudden passing was a shock to the world, and her funeral became one of the most-watched events on television.

Dianaโ€™s time with the Royal Family was not easy, as Charles’s affair with Camilla strained their marriage. During her time in the royal spotlight, Diana herself was the subject of affair rumors. Known as the โ€œPeopleโ€™s Princess,โ€ Diana often shared candid insights into her experiences within the Royal Family, including what she felt was unfair treatment.

A collection of Dianaโ€™s letters has repeatedly made headlines over the years, and recently, two more letters have surfaced for auction. These particular letters give a glimpse into a cheeky, perhaps less-known aspect of Diana’s personality, especially a set of letters addressed to the King of Greece that surely would have surprised the late Queen Elizabeth and other royal family members.

The Rocky Path in the Royal Family

Princess Diana’s life as part of the Royal Family was filled with difficulties. After marrying Charles, their relationship soured, pulling them apart over time. It’s said that the late Queen Elizabeth II attempted to mend their marriage multiple times. A month following Dianaโ€™s shocking BBC interview, the queen sent the couple a letter advising them to finalize their divorce for the sake of the monarchyโ€™s reputation.

Having finally divorced, Diana found love with Egyptian film producer Dodi Al Fayed, only to both tragically pass away in the same fateful car crash in 1997.

Letters Reveal Deep Feelings

While living the royal life, Diana received numerous letters. Recently, a series of emotionally charged letters she wrote were auctioned for $169,663. As told by the Mirror, these 32 intimate letters were penned by Diana to her friends, Susie and Tarek Kasseem, during her divorce from Charles. Diana confided how the ordeal left her โ€œon my knees,โ€ revealing fears that the royals may have tapped her phone.

One letter from April 1996 described her struggle to maintain composure amid the divorce’s pressures. โ€œI am having a very difficult time, and pressure is serious and coming from all sides. Itโ€™s too difficult sometimes to keep oneโ€™s head up, and today I am on my knees and just longing for this divorce to go through as the possible cost is tremendous.โ€

In another letter, she expressed how even minor communications were tinged with fear due to the surveillance she suspected: โ€œAs I donโ€™t have a mobile, it is difficult to discuss personal issues as my lines here are constantly recorded and passed on. If Iโ€™d known a year ago what Iโ€™d experience going through this divorce I never would have consented. Itโ€™s desperate and ugly.โ€

Friendship During Turmoil

Diana graciously thanked the Kasseem family for hosting her Christmas in 1995 when Charles had Prince Harry and William over at Sandringham. Sold for about $110,000, some of the letters’ proceeds were to be shared with charities Diana supported with Susie.

Mimi Connell-Lay of Lay’s Auctioneers commented that these letters were โ€œfrankly astonishing,โ€ emphasizing the priceless friendship Diana shared with Susie. Together, they formed a bond that provided Diana much-needed solace and understanding amid royal upheavals.

The Tragic End

In the early hours of a tragic day, Diana’s life was claimed by a car accident in Paris. Though efforts were made for over an hour at the crash scene, Diana succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Her untimely death was felt as a great loss by many worldwide. A Paris surgeon, MonSef Dahman, was one of those striving hard to save her that fateful night.

Despite extensive efforts by Dahman and his team with electric shocks and cardiac massage, Dianaโ€™s injuries were too grave. Recalling the intensity and desperation of that night, he shared feelings of deep frustration with how little they could do to save her.

Speculations and Concerns

In 2003, some unsettling letters surfaced, given to Dianaโ€™s former butler, Paul Burrell. These letters revealed Diana’s unease about a potential plot to engineer her death โ€“ a sentiment she shared with Burrell months before her accident. Such speculations added another somber layer to the untimely death, leading to yet more questions and ongoing public curiosity.

One letter detailed her fears of an โ€œaccidentโ€ being plotted, hypothesizing a crash orchestrated to allow Charles to remarry. The eerie detail demonstrated her desolation amid what she termed as constant battles.

Relations Strained and Paul Burrellโ€™s Role

After its release in 2003, Paul Burrell’s book stirred controversy, hinting at strained relations between him, and Dianaโ€™s sons, Harry and William. Harry, particularly, was incensed, viewing the book as a betrayal. William and Harry condemned Burrell’s revelations as a breach of trust from someone they once viewed as a confidant.

Diana’s Playful Side

Earlier this year, two playful greeting cards from Diana to King Constantine II of Greece were put up for auction. They showed a less serious side of Diana, filled with puns and humor. The charming cards, with cheeky captions about men and relationships, were accompanied by her affectionate notes. They fetched around $7,000 at auction, capturing an alternative and whimsical glimpse into Diana’s personality rarely spotlighted in official royal accounts.

Through these correspondences, we catch a glimpse of Diana’s humor, warmth, and struggles, keeping her cherished memory ever vibrant in our hearts.
