Donald Trump Sets the National Guard on Washington’s Streets

A recent declaration by former President Donald Trump regarding policing has stirred strong reactions, with many advocating for his impeachment.
The announcement, made on August 11, unveiled a vigorous plan intended to curb what Trump perceives as rampant crime in Washington, D.C. Following consultations with officials, he stressed his determination to transform the capital into a place of beauty and safety once more.
The former president emphasized a no-tolerance strategy, which includes instructing those without homes to “leave immediately.”
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump proclaimed, โIt was the worldโs most beautiful capital before the chaos. It will return to that state soon.โ
This decision raised concerns about a potential militarized response, especially after a similar approach used recently in Los Angeles during immigration protests.

Those concerns were realized when Trump declared a โpublic safety emergencyโ in Washington, asserting that it had become a “sanctuary for illegal aliens” with rampant lawlessness, ranking it among the world’s most dangerous cities.
Unexpected and Troubling Developments
Despite data indicating a significant reduction in violent crime in D.C., Trump invoked section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, leading to a federal takeover of the city’s police.
The real controversy arose when he suggested that officers now have unrestricted authority to handle hostilities in the area.
In a press briefing, Trump expressed, โThey only grasp one language. It’s been frustrating to watch officers restrained while facing hostility. Now, they are empowered to act as necessary.โ

The response from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was clear: โThis is both unsettling and without precedent, yet not entirely shocking given past rhetoric.โ
A Divisive Move
On platforms like Reddit, public response was critical, with comments branding the initiative as the onset of a “Trump police state.”
One user expressed outrage, while another called for immediate impeachment.
Critics are particularly concerned that the new policy could foster increased police violence against civilians.
โThis move supports the notion that police endure frequent abuse, justifying increased aggression,โ remarked a commentator.

โAt no point were officers forced to tolerate disrespect. Using it to bolster state aggression is a calculated move.โ
Despite this, Trump defends his actions as necessary to save D.C. from chaos, declaring: โThis marks the liberation of D.C. We will reclaim our capital.โ
The enacted measures, which include the deployment of 800 National Guard members, will last for 30 days.
Legal Questions Over National Guard Use in Los Angeles
Meanwhile, a federal judge in San Francisco examines whether Trump overstepped by deploying the National Guard during California immigration protests in June.
This marked the first such federal action in 60 years without governor approval. Judge Charles Breyer stressed the importance of determining if the military was employed to enforce domestic law and the potential for future misuse.
California officials have argued against federal military intervention, labeling it a profound challenge to the founding principles of the nation.
Trump’s administration maintains that deploying the National Guard is fully permissible.
