Eric McCormack is better known as the character he played on the sitcom “Will and Grace.” He stared on the show as gay lawyer Will Truman and won an Emmy for his role on the show in 2001.
While McCormack was convincingly gay on the show, in real life, he’s straight and was happily married the entire time the show was in production.
Back in 1997, just five months after landing the role on “Will and Grace,” McCormack married Janet Holden. The couple met on the set of the western series “Lonesome Dove,” and they have celebrated 26 years of marriage together. It looks like they won’t be celebrating a 27th year.
On Wednesday November 22, 2023, one day before Thanksgiving, Holden filed for divorce. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the breakup, which basically means we have no idea why she really wants a divorce. She did not include a date of separation, but she did include a request for spousal support. She would not be eligible for child support since the couple does not have any minor children. Their only child is a son named Finnigan who is currently 21 years old.
While we don’t know why they’re getting divorced, we do know how they met and what their early relationship was like. Back in 2007, McCormack told The Guardian, “I met my wife, Janet, in 1994 on the set of a TV series. She was the assistant director. I was just coming out of a relationship, and not to be trusted. I’d been dating actresses but Janet was different. She wore jeans, drove a pick-up truck.”
McCormack added that he had to “convince” Holden to date him. He explained, “She knew actors are a lot of work: it would be like taking your work home with you. But I managed to convince her. We had a secret affair the first season. I mean, dating crew! Actually, it was much worse for her, because she wasn’t supposed to give any of the actors preferential treatment.”
McCormack also shared that he’s grateful he didn’t become famous until he was married. He said, “I think I conducted myself as a much better human being because I was already married when all that came along.”
