Saying Farewell: Remembering the Wife of a Comedic Legend

Fond Memories of a Comedic Love Story

In 1962, Buddy Hackett, a close friend of the renowned comedian and actor Bob Newhart, played cupid and introduced him to a special someone. Reflecting on that fateful encounter in a 2019 interview with PEOPLE, Bob shared the story. Buddy had said, “I have a girl in mind for you. She’s currently with someone else, but I don’t think he’s right for her. So, I’m setting you up on a blind date. You’ll meet her, go on dates, get married, and eventually have kids. And one of those kids will be named Buddy.” As destiny would have it, Buddy’s predictions came true.

That’s how Bob Newhart met Ginny, a truly remarkable woman. They tied the knot in 1963 and shared a loving marriage lasting 60 years. Their 60th wedding anniversary was joyously celebrated in January 2023.

Tragically, on April 24, 2023, Bob shared the heartbreaking news of his wife’s passing. With deep sorrow, he expressed on Twitter, “We lost our beloved Ginnie Quinn Newhart – Wife, Mother, and Grandmother on April 23rd, 2023 after a long battle with illness. She was our rock, and we miss her terribly.” Ginny was 82 years old.

Over the years, Bob and Ginny were often asked about the secret to their enduring marriage. Both credited “laughter” as a significant contributor to their success. In a 2022 interview with Parade, Bob explained, “I believe a sense of humor is crucial for a lasting marriage.” Similarly, Ginny shared with PBS in 2005, “Comedians are a joy to be around.”

As the heartbreaking news spread, actress Julie Duffy, who had the pleasure of working with Bob on the show “Newhart,” paid tribute to Ginny on Twitter. In her heartfelt tribute, she described her as “funny, candid, and possessing a heart of gold.” Julie also shared that Ginny provided invaluable advice on various aspects of life, from home decor to raising children and even navigating the complexities of married life. Julie fondly concluded, “I loved her. RIP Ginnie Newhart.”

Ginny leaves behind her loving husband Bob, their four children — Rob, Tim, Jennifer, and Courtney — and ten cherished grandchildren.
