This morning, the world woke up to the sorrowful news of Pope Francis’s passing. On Easter Monday, the Vatican announced the sad news of the Pope’s unexpected death.

The city of Rome became a pilgrimage destination as hundreds of thousands of individuals flocked to the Vatican to mark the Easter period in his honor.
On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis made what would be his last visit to St. Peter’s Square, partaking in the celebration of this cherished occasion. Due to his recent health challenges, mainly double pneumonia, he was unable to preside over the Mass, which was instead led by a prominent cardinal.

In a touching moment, tens of thousands of Catholics participated in the event led by Cardinal Angelo Comastri. Pope Francis, appearing on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, blessed the crowd, extending a heartfelt wish for a “Happy Easter.”
During such events, it’s customary for the Pope to deliver the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” — a message to the city and the world. This year, the task was graciously taken over by a Vatican archbishop, as Pope Francis was confined to a wheelchair.
The Pope’s message spanned a spectrum of critical issues that resonated deeply with audiences. He spoke about the dire situations in places like Gaza, advocating once more for a ceasefire, and expressed concern over the rise of antisemitism globally.
He emphasized that achieving peace is impossible without embracing religious freedom and respecting the diverse opinions of others.

Pope Francis lived to the age of eighty-eight. In recent years, he had spent considerable time in and out of hospitals, even staying at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for a month before being discharged just weeks ago.
Upon returning home, he required ongoing care from doctors to recuperate from the severe ailment he had battled.
Because of his frail health, the Pope was absent from numerous Holy Week ceremonies for the first time since he was elected in 2013.

Instead, he delegated responsibilities to cardinals to lead the Easter vigil at Saint Peter’s Basilica on Saturday and the Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum on Friday.
He also missed the traditional foot-washing ceremony on Thursday, which symbolizes Jesus Christ’s act of humility in washing his disciples’ feet.
Nevertheless, he made a brief appearance to greet visitors on Saturday, bringing joy to those present.
Pope Francis leaves behind an indelible legacy, being celebrated as a figure of deep faith and integrity. For generations, he will be remembered fondly.
