The chances of having twins climbed by 72% between 1980 and 2018, but they are still extremely rare. Twins account for around 33 of every 1,000 births.
How likely are identical twins to exist? Per 1,000 births, three or four sets of identical twins are born. Again, not all that common.
Savannah Combs, a 23-year-old lady, was ecstatic to learn she was having twins. They both had Down syndrome, which she subsequently found was an additional rarity.
The news was obviously distressing. Savannah and Justin Ackerman were well aware that some people would pass judgment on them and their children because of their situation.
Yet, Savannah places a high value on them as a result of this.
“What they have is incredibly rare, but they’ve been my little gems,” she told News4JAX.
Savannah, a Middleburg, Florida resident, posted videos of her postpartum journey with her children Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman on TikTok, and the videos quickly went viral.
In one of her videos, Savannah stated that she was urged to abort her children because they would not survive.
She chose to retain them and give them a chance.
“Every [prenatal] appointment they had while they were alive was a blessing to me,” Savannah said.
Her husband was away at boot camp when she discovered they both had Down syndrome.
Savannah was 29 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to the hospital, where she gave birth to twin daughters. ‘s also a lot of other things. And so forth. And it goes on and on. And on. And on. And on. And on. And it goes on and on.
Because they were born two months early, the twins had to spend a few weeks in the NICU before going home.
“They’re termed mono di twins because they had their own sacs but shared the same placenta, which meant they were going to be identical,” she explained.
“Mo di twins are extremely uncommon. When you add Down syndrome to the mix, it’s one in every two million.”
Savannah claims that despite their uncommon disability, they are just like any other youngster.
“They have emotions. They have a heart that beats. They know how to communicate. They understand how you do things. “They’ll get there,” she promised.
“As I previously stated, they may be a step behind, but they will complete it. I’ve discovered that these kids are feisty and cheerful little beings.”
Savannah posts wonderful updates on TikTok as each youngster continues to reach milestones.
“I’m going to tell them that they’re just like us, and they’ll get there if they set their minds to it.”
Yet, some people feel compelled to insult Savannah and her family. As a result, the young mother has had to respond to some truly rude social media users.
“I wouldn’t want those infants; if my babies were born like that, they’d be put up for adoption,” one individual wrote to the mother.
Savannah, on the other hand, had the perfect response, which she published on Facebook.
“I remarked, it’s a good thing they weren’t born to you and were born to me. God understood what he was doing when he gave these babies to the proper parents who would adore them no matter what.”
