Donald Trump Makes a Firm Demand of Canada’s Prime Minister
In a recent development, former President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, cautioning that Canada would face severe consequences if it pursued a specific foreign trade agreement.

This announcement followed Prime Minister Carney’s passionate address at the World Economic Forum held in Davos on January 20, where he critiqued Trump’s controversial pursuit of acquiring Greenland.
During his speech, Carney remarked, โIt seems that every day highlights the era of great power rivalry we are living through, with the fading of a rules-based order. The strong still have their way, while the vulnerable suffer.โ
Supporting Greenland in its territorial sovereignty, he stated: โRegarding Arctic sovereignty, we stand firmly beside Greenland and Denmark, fully endorsing their sovereign right to determine their own future.โ
โCanada opposes the imposition of tariffs over Greenland and advocates for focused discussions to reach our common goals of security and prosperity in the Arctic region.
โThe past order is not returning. Nostalgia is no strategy. We must confront reality.โ
Carney encouraged countries, especially those regarded as ‘middle powers’ like Canada, to cease pretending and focus on bolstering their domestic strength while collaborating internationally.

Recently, in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Carney disclosed a trade deal focusing on electric vehicles, as reported by the BBC.
Back then, Trump expressed approval, calling the agreement ‘a positive development,’ but has since revised his stance.
On January 24, Trump addressed Carney directly on Truth Social, calling him ‘governor’ and opining that Canada’s trade deal with China was unlikely.
Trump stated, โGovernor Carney, if you believe Canada will act as a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to funnel goods into the United States, you are mistaken.โ
โChina will overwhelm Canada, entirely consume it, damaging its businesses, social structure, and lifestyle.โ
He further warned Carney: โIf this deal with China proceeds, Canada will face an immediate 100% tariff on all goods entering the USA. Thank you!โ
Under this agreement, Canada plans to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, with China reciprocating by reducing duties on Canadian agricultural exports.
Trump’s change of heart could stem from Carney’s remarks at Davos, which seemed to have disturbed the former President. In response, Trump commented, โCanada exists today thanks to the United States. Keep this in mind, Mark, when you next speak.โ

In his speech, Carney reflected: โFor many years, nations like Canada thrived under the established rules-based order.โ
He acknowledged Canadaโs commitment to these international institutions, which supported its ability to follow foreign policies grounded on values.
Describing the international order as ‘partly misleading,’ Carney criticized how the powerful nations sometimes sidestepped rules for convenience and how trade rules were unequally enforced.
He concluded that Canada wished to pursue a different path.
He elaborated: โOver the last twenty years, financial, health, energy, and political crises have unveiled the dangers of extreme global integration. Recently, powerful nations have used economic ties as leverage, exerting tariffs as pressure, turning financial systems into tools of coercion, and exploiting supply chains as weaknesses.โ
โOne cannot thrive under the illusion of mutual benefit when said integration inadvertently leads to subordination.โ
