Prince William has certainly faced numerous challenges in his life. From the very day he was born, he was destined for royal responsibilities, and he experienced the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Princess Diana, during his teenage years.
Since Diana’s passing, William, along with other members of the Royal Family, has endeavored to honor her legacy in many meaningful ways. Much like how the Prince of Wales and his wife, Kate Middleton, strive to bring up their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—with a sense of normalcy, Diana also aimed for that balance with William and his brother, Prince Harry.
In following his mother’s footsteps, William not only embraces her parenting style but has also adopted a poignant tradition she left behind. Both Prince William and Prince Harry shared a close bond during their formative years, and their connection grew even stronger following Diana’s tragic death.
It’s well known that growing up in the Royal Family significantly differs from typical childhood experiences. Yet, letters from Diana reveal her efforts to make her sons’ lives feel as ordinary as possible. In a letter penned in March 1985, mere months following Harry’s birth, Diana expressed these sentiments.
Reflecting on his upbringing, William once shared, “I’m grateful my mother introduced me to the issue of homelessness from a young age. I intend to expose my children to the same cause when it aligns with their education. This topic naturally emerges during our school runs.”
He continued to recount how discussions arose in the car rides through London, observing people on the streets. “I’d often prompt my kids with questions like, ‘Why might that person be there?’ or ‘What could be going on?’ It’s important to spark these conversations at the right moment, in an age-appropriate manner—it’s likely beneficial for all.”
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Prince William’s efforts are deeply rooted in Diana’s values. “It wasn’t only Diana who wanted her sons to be connected with life outside royal confines; Charles shared this vision. Both parents desired their boys to understand everyday life beyond royal duties,” she explained.
Given that William has passionately championed homelessness since he was 18, the children of William and Kate are likely more attuned to social issues than other children of affluent backgrounds. Nicholl noted, “Their early exposure is attributed significantly to the dedication of both William and Kate.”
