Carol Robles-Román was born and raised in New York. She went on to become an advocate for women’s rights during both her career as a lawyer and while working in public office.
On August 20, 2023, Robles-Román passed away at the age of 60. Her sister announced the sad news on X (formerly Twitter) the following day. She wrote, “I am so sorry to share the news of the death of my sister and best friend, Carol Robles-Roman, a fierce warrior on behalf of women and girls everywhere.” Robles-Román’s cause of death was lung cancer, which she had been fighting since 2017.
Robles-Román graduated from Fordham University before going to law school at New York University. Upon hearing the news of her death, New York University Dean Troy McKenzie shared, “Carol was a tremendous lawyer and a champion for civil rights throughout her career.” He added, “Her passion and dedication to serving her community will leave an indelible mark on the Law School and the legal profession.”
Robles-Román started her career in Brooklyn working in family law as a senior court attorney. Later in her career, she worked in the New York State Attorney General’s Office as an assistant attorney general in the civil rights bureau. She served as a legal advisor to Mayor Michael Bloomberg before serving as deputy mayor for 10 years.
Bloomberg shared a tribute to Robles-Román on X writing, “For twelve years we sat across from each other in City Hall, and her legal guidance was instrumental in advancing our agenda across a broad range of issues. She was a champion of equality and justice who helped spearhead groundbreaking work to make the city more accessible to our to immigrant and disabled communities, and to stop domestic violence and human trafficking.” He added, “To lose her at still such a young age is a terrible tragedy, and I know I speak for our entire City Hall team when I say that my heart goes out to her husband, Judge Nelson Román, her children Ariana and Andrés, and all their family.”
