The year 2022 was a very exciting year for the Presley family with the release of the film “Elvis,” and in early 2023, at awards season, the family geared up to support the film by attending the awards shows.
In January, Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley were both at the Golden Globes to support the film’s nominations. It was an exciting night, but it ended up being a rollercoaster of a week. Just two days later, Lisa Marie suffered from cardiac arrest and was rushed from her home to the hospital. Doctors tried to save her life, but she was later pronounced dead. Her mother, Priscilla, took on the heartbreaking task of announcing her daughter’s death. Lisa Marie was only 54 years old.
Months later, we finally know Lisa Marie’s cause of death. It turned out that it was related to a previous surgery she had, and it also seems that it was related to opioids. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s report, a few months before her death, she had a cosmetic procedure. She was prescribed opioids after her surgery, but it’s likely that she accidentally overdosed. She had a history of forgetting that she already took her medication and taking it a second time. However, opioids were not listed as Lisa Marie’s official cause of death.
According to the L.A. County Coroner, Lisa Marie died due to a small bowel obstruction. She’d had gastric bypass years earlier, and her official cause of death was sequelae of small bowel obstruction. Sequelae is where one medical condition ends up causing another medical condition. In this case, the bowel obstruction was related to a previous surgery.
According to the coroner, there wasn’t any drug paraphernalia found in Lisa Marie’s home. The toxicology report came back negative; however, since she was prescribed opioids, there were two opioids found in her blood – Oxycodone and Buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is used for the treatment of opioid abuse.
While opioids were not the direct cause of her death, they can cause constipation, which can cause a bowel obstruction, which was the cause of her death.
